Pongo at Big Basin

Pongo -- Big Basin Redwoods State Park, CA

This picture was taken a few years ago on one of the first day trips I took Pongo on.  He can't go on the trails at Big Basin, but there are plenty of roadways--some without cars--that he was able to walk with on, so it's not a bad place for dogs.  Actually, it's probably a better dog walking park than it is picture taking park, I've never been able to get many memorable photos from this place.  It's a nice park to spend a day in, though, and for Vertigo fans it's a must visit since this is the place where Scotty and Madeline went on their "date" in the redwoods.

The redwoods at Big Basin State Park aren't the most photogenic of trees.  You have to work pretty hard for interesting shots.  I don't think I worked hard enough here.  I was more interested in hacking out the camera settings anyway, so I'm actually kind of happy with the quality of this photo aside from the dull composition.  Big Basin is a great place for a hike in the woods, not so great for photography, at least from my limited experience.

I spent the afternoon at Big Basin today.  It was very crowded.  It's a big place, though, so although finding a parking spot took a while, once I was on a non-paved trail it wasn't too bad.  I never went more than a couple of minutes without seeing somebody, though.

It's a tough venue for taking pictures.  The redwoods lack the majesty of those in Humboldt County and Redwoods National Park up North nor do they share the intimacy of those in Muir Woods.  Still, while it might not be an amazing setting for taking pictures it works well for hiking and picnicking.  I was thinking about camping out here tonight but I wasn't quite feeling it so headed home instead.  I'll take Pongo out for a drive tomorrow, he'll like that.
